- Set a carryover cap or expiry date in a leave policy.
Carryover lets people keep some or all of their unused leave when a new leave year starts. You set it per leave policy, so each leave type and location can have its own rule.
How it works
- Year end. When a location's leave year starts, a nightly job closes the old year for every leave type that has a policy there, and credits whatever carries into the new year.
- Turning it on. Carryover applies when the policy has a cap, an expiry date, or both. With a cap, anything above it is forfeited. With only an expiry date, the whole balance carries.
- Without carryover, the policy is use-it-or-lose-it: the old year closes at zero and the new year starts from its own allowance. This is how every policy works on Free.
- Negative balances always carry over in full, as a debt against the new year.
- Expiry. A recurring date, such as 31 March. On that date, whatever is still unused of the carried leave is removed. Leave taken in the new year uses up carried leave first.
- Each step is posted to the balance history (close-out, carryover, expiry), so you can see where the leave went.
Good to know
- You can also run carryover for a year by hand from the policies page. It's safe to repeat: balances that already rolled over are skipped.
- Archived leave types and archived policies don't carry over.
- If you move to Free, policies that already have carryover keep applying it at year end, but you can't add or change carryover settings.
