Requests that compute themselves
Employees choose a type and a date range. The hours, the holidays, the balance after and the approval path are all computed before they submit.
Hour-accurate by default
A request covers an inclusive date range. Weekends are skipped, the employee's location's public holidays are skipped, and every remaining day counts that employee's working hours — eight by default, set per person. Dates are evaluated in UTC, so a result never depends on which server did the math.
The summary rail shows the working days requested, the current balance, this request and the balance after, with a bar that turns red when the balance would run out.
Half-days and custom hours
A single-day request can carry a custom number of hours — a half day in one click, or an exact figure — never more than that day's working hours.
Bookings spread their hours evenly across their working days, and a day is over-booked once existing bookings plus the new one exceed the working day. Two four-hour halves of an eight-hour day coexist; four hours plus six does not.
- Morning off
- 4.0 h — accepted
- Afternoon off
- 4.0 h — accepted, day is full
- Another 6 h that day
- Rejected: exceeds the daily cap
Told before they submit
The form flags what will matter: an insufficient balance (still submittable unless the type forbids negatives or the floor is hit), a date before probation ends, a date before the hire date, or a blackout. A Hard-block blackout refuses the dates outright; a Needs-approval blackout lets the request through but routes it to a person even when the type would normally auto-approve.
The approval path is spelled out up front — “Goes to Olivia Owner, CEO” or “Approved automatically” — so nobody wonders where a request went.
Attachments and changes
Attach a sick note or travel document: PDF, JPG or PNG, up to 5 MB each and five per request. Files go straight to a private bucket through a five-minute signed upload link and are viewed through sixty-second signed links; unclaimed uploads are pruned after 24 hours.
A pending request can be edited or cancelled. Cancelling an approved request posts a reversing entry on the ledger, so the balance is restored and the history stays complete.

FAQ
Leave requests, answered
Can someone book two half days on the same day?
Yes — as two requests, as long as their hours add up to no more than the working day. The daily cap is enforced when the second one is submitted.
Do public holidays cost balance?
Never. Holidays for the employee's location are excluded from the hour count, and the requester sees the working-day total before submitting.
Can an employee change a request after it's approved?
They cancel it and submit a new one. The cancellation posts a reversing ledger entry, so nothing is edited in place and the audit trail stays intact.
